#014: 145 Alive with Tim G5TM
Tim G5TM joins the crew for a chat about the 145 Alive initiative, and in true TEHRS style also multiple layers of tangential discussions. He shares his week of working 15m with the flower pot (T2LT), including Reunion Island, Argentina and W3FF in California – bicycle mobile with a portable hex beam 12 feet above the ground (link below). Tobias DL3MHT is still recovering from his bicycle malfunction and Kjetil LB4FH returned from his SOTA activation on 15m just in time for the stream. Bob LB5JJ has been taking notes, and discovers he does more radio then he thinks; managing one POTA activation, two SOTA activations, working portable for both a 2m and 10m net. And still has a family. Walt K4OGO has taken his trusty X6100 for last spin before moving on to his new FT-891. Morten LB0FI introduces us to his new N-7500 and it’s habit of bombarding repeaters with APRS messages. His attempted POTA activation is interrupted by a bicycle race and he then discovers he’s not 8 any more when his neck locks up; putting a stop to further plans for portable radio for that week. To compensate he does what any sane amateur radio operator would do; he goes on a shopping spree on Amazon and eBay, netting an Allstar node and a new EFHW antenna. So; for the first tangent of the evening the discussion moves to the power handling capability of a 49:1 transformer wound on an FT-140-43. Recovering from the tangent Tim shares details of the 145 Alive initiative which is having great success in the UK. The latest event had 464 operators checking in, from 46 of the 48 UK counties. There’s much discussion and the discussion stays on topic for a surprising amount of time. Towards the end the chat do drift off into the new FTM-500 and Yeasus interesting take on radio user interfaces, Mortens desire for a sensible 100W radio and Walts love of the Xiegu G90. And we learn that both Tobias and Bob are liking the QMX from QRP Labs.
